The role of Vitamin A and C in Skin Rejuvenation

As we age, our skin starts to break down due to the natural ageing process, which means our skin starts lacking vitamins we need, which we then change our diets, add supplements and apply topicals to keep it healthy and youthful.

Vitamin A and C play a vital role in our skincare and applied topically means it’s going straight to our biggest organ “our skin” instead of just taking vitamins and supplements orally as they go straight to our internal organs and skin ends up with the least amount.

So let’s take a look at these two vitamins and their important role to skin rejuvenation:

VITAMIN A

Vitamin A is known as retinoids – retinol which is a powerful ingredient to reducing fine and coarse lines, wrinkles, acne, pigmentation, roughness and sallowness, as it turns over your skin cells from where they begin to produce fresh, new, vibrant cells giving you healthier, smoother and clearer skin.  It plays a vital role in skin rejuvenation to assist in photodamaged skin – induced by UV rays. As our skin cells turn over every 45 days, using vitamin a is important to skin rejuvenation as it helps to break down our skin and penetrate our other skincare products more effectively.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is known as an antioxidant that plays an important role in repairing photodamage skin, wrinkles, dryness, wound healing, pigmentation and also protects your skin from free radicals and future damage.  This powerful ingredient protects your skin and stimulates your natural collagen and elastin (a protein which counts for the basic structure of our skin) and as we age, this breaks down and we start seeing our skin as not so plump as our younger years.

So why are these vitamins so important in skin rejuvenation?  One breaks down the damaged and the other one repairs and protects. Just like a car or a house, eventually, everything breaks down and needs repairing, and using these two in conjunction with each other is your ultimate way to rejuvenate your skin.

What is the best way to use these two?

All products contain different amounts of ingredients and different ways to be used.  Using these two as a serum is the most powerful way to get the best out of them. If you have never used these ingredients, always start with a low dosage to build your skin up as, like anything, it can cause irritations if your skin is not used to its high doses.

Using a Vitamin A only serum of a night time and Vitamin C of a day time is the key to using these two products at home.  Unless we have been told by a professional to use vitamin A both morning and night, that is the only time you should be using it this way.  And using Vitamin A means you should always be wearing an SPF 30+ or higher! This is a MUST! If not, your skin is going to become sensitised and prone to more skin problems.

Vitamin C will protect your skin during the day from future damage. This is not a sunscreen and is not to be used as one as it does not protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays.

When having skin treatments and using these within your homecare regime will give you results within 3 months.  You will see the change and then understand how important these two vitamins play in the role of rejuvenation of our skin.
